On September 21, 2021, the Memphis Police Department was given a report of a sexual assault that took place earlier that day.

The sexual assault kit was sent to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation two days after it had been prepared.

WREG has reached out to the TBI in order to learn why the delay that has occurred in matching Abston-Henderson.

The DNA that was taken from a sandal that was left at the scene of Eliza Fletcher’s kidnapping on Central avenue was matched in less than twenty-four hours (18 hours).

The TBI allows accelerated DNA investigations when requested by a local agency, like in the Eliza Fletcher case.

After gathering key pieces of evidence, our investigators were able to zero in on Cleotha Abston as the person responsible for the crime in less than 18 hours.

The regulator claimed the September 2017 sample wasn’t hurried. We submitted it there since regular casework takes 33–49 weeks to process.
