Description:The New York City-based author Salman Rushdie was assaulted while he was delivering a lecture.

Brief News:

On Friday, as Salman Rushdie prepared to give a lecture in western New York, a guy seized the stage and stabbed the author in the neck and abdomen.

In the 1980s, Rushdie’s book “The Satanic Verses” was the object of death threats from the Iranian government.

Rushdie, 75, was hospitalized by helicopter. The author’s agency said he had a damaged liver, severed nerves in his arm, and a probable lost eye.

Hadi Matar, 24, of Fairview, New Jersey, was arrested as the suspect in the assault. He was taken into custody immediately and was being held for arraignment.

“The Satanic Verses” was released a decade before Matar’s birth. Maj. Eugene Staniszewski said police don’t know what triggered the attack.

Reporter from the Associated Press saw the assailant approach Rushdie on stage at the Chautauqua Institution and stab or hit him 10–15 times as he was being presented.

The author was either pushed to the ground or passed out, and the suspect was brought into custody after both of these events had place.

Rushdie’s injuries were “severe but recoverable,” according to Dr. Martin Haskell, a doctor who was among those who raced to aid.

Henry Reese, the event’s moderator and the co-founder of a group that provides safe havens for persecuted authors, was also a target of violence. He is 73 years old.
