The United States has filed charges against three Iranian nationals for their roles in a wide-ranging hacking and extortion campaign targeting targets in the United States.

The Justice Department unsealed an indictment against three Iranian nationals on Wednesday, accusing them of hacking and extorting hundreds of U.S. and international organizations.

The indictment alleges that the Iranian nationals hacked the organizations for the purpose of gaining personal financial benefit.

Federal prosecutors in New Jersey have charged a Pennsylvania domestic abuse shelter, a Mississippi electricity business, and a New Jersey municipal government.

The indictment does not indicate that Iranians were responsible for the hacking outlined on behalf of the Iranian government.

Treasury Department sanctioned three Iranian nationals on Wednesday, saying they worked for IT businesses with IRGC ties (IRGC).

A Justice Department official said Wednesday that Iranian hackers sought $300,000 to release captive computers.

Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the allegations made by the Justice Department.

The US sees this as another instance in which Iran engages in or permits cyberattacks that cost American and allied institutions money.

Since July, the Albanian government has made two accusations that Iran is responsible for attacks that have brought down Albanian government systems.

These accusations put the ability of the Biden administration to aid in the protection of a NATO member from hacking to the test.
