UAW strikes Stellantis in Indiana.

Indiana’s Stellantis foundry has striking employees.

Saturday marked the beginning of a strike at the Stellantis casting facility in Indiana, which was called for by the United Auto Workers union.

The strike was called over concerns regarding health and safety, including the company’s alleged failure to repair and replace the plant’s air conditioning and heating systems.

A protracted strike at the 35-acre Kokomo complex, which makes components for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and RAM power trains, would hamper North American auto manufacturing.

Stellantis has said that it would start bargaining over a new contract with the striking UAW Local 1166 as soon as possible.

Stellantis released a statement in which they emphasized their commitment to “creating a safe and healthy work environment for all workers.”

The company was dismayed by the UAW’s decision to walk away from discussions after two days of good faith talks.

Stellantis said the 1,200-person Kokomo Casting factory is the world’s biggest die cast enterprise. It makes engine blocks and gearboxes from aluminum.
