10,000 people lost electricity after a squirrel broke a substation.

According to a tweet from company spokesperson Bonita Harris, Dominion Energy suffered a blackout on September 7 around 8:45 a.m.

According to Harris, approximately 10,000 people in Virginia lost electricity because of the outage. The lights came back on at roughly 10 a.m.

Harris affirmed that "standard equipment is in place" at Dominion Energy to ensure the safety of squirrels and other wildlife along power lines.

Although the frequency of incidences has been considerably reduced by this technology, "determined tiny animals" have been known to still get through.

Harris said the squirrel died from its injuries, despite the fact that certain animals can withstand quick electric shocks without lasting effects.
